چکیده

A transplantable melanoma of Golden hamsters has been carried by the chunk method from the 15th through the 52nd generation and examined for growth characteristics and for light and electron microscopic appearance as well as for light microscopy histochemistry. Grossly, tumors were heavily pigmented and inva sive, and grew rapidly to kill the animals in 4 to 6 weeks. The growth rate remained stable within the 3 years of study. Histologically, malignant cells formed Fontanapositive pigment and grew as a solid tumor about dilated vascular channels with a supporting reticulum. Very little inflammatory infiltrate occurred, but necrosis and hemorrhage were common. 3,4-Dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine oxidase and acid phosphatase activity were seen together in most viable cells. Ultrastructurally, in addi tion to premelanosomes and melanosomes, large polyribosomes and rough endoplasmic reticulum abounded in most cells. Large autophagic vacuoles containing melanin granules were seen frequently, suggesting that the cells did not discharge their melanin. Virus-like particles were observed in the rough endoplasmic re ticulum in a majority of cells of every generation of tu mor; they did not occur in inflammatory or endothelial cells, or in surrounding normal structures. Transplanta tion of the tumor in albino hamsters resulted in an identi cal pigmented tumor, except that it grew more slowly. Virus-like particles occurred in large amounts. The rela tionship of virus-like particles to melanoma formation remains unknown. They may transform cells to increase growth rate and account for the very rapid growth of heavily pigmented melanomas.

Light and electron microscopic study of the tongue in the White-eared bulbul (Pycnonotus leucotis)

The aim of the present study was to investigate the light and electron microscopic structure of the tongue in White-eared bulbul (Pycnonotus leucotis). Six adult White-eared bulbul (3 males and 3 females) in Shahrekord district were used in the investigation. Samples of the apex, body and root of the tongue were prepared routinely for light and electron microscopic study. Results showed that th...

Effects of Sodium Valproate on the Replication of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1: An in Vitro Study

Background: Sodium valproate, an anticonvulsant drug, is reported to stimulate Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 and Human cytomegalovirus replication. Since epileptic patients undergoing sodium valproate therapy may suffer from various virus infections, the effect of this drug on replication of viruses especially those affecting neuronal tissues such as Herpes simplex virus type 1 is worthy ...

Light and scanning electron microscopic study of the lingual structure in the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus)

BACKGROUND: The tongue, which plays a very important role in food intake by vertebrates, exhibits significant morphological variations that appear to represent adaptation to the current environmental conditions of each respective habitat. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present investigation was to investigate lingual structure in adult budgerigar. METHODS: Tongues of 12 adult budgerigars were used ...

Intracellular Localization of Type 4 Adenovirus I. Cellular Fractionation

Electron microscopic studies by several investigators (1-3) have shown virus-like particles in the nuclei of HeLa cells infected with adenoviruses. Morgan and his associates (3) showed disruption of the nuclear membrane in a few cells with release of virus-like particles into the cytoplasm, but did not note viral development in the cytoplasm. A tremendous number of particles have been observed ...
